Overview

Globus Online is a tool for users to request data transfers between predefined Globus Online sites (endpoints), or between an endpoint and a user desktop/laptop running Windows/Mac/Linux. Under the hood Globus Online uses GridFTP to do managed data transfers. Users do not need to know anything about GridFTP.

Usage

To use Globus Online, one needs to open a free account at Globus Online web page:

http://www.globusonline.org

Once logged in, users can request data transfers, view progress on existing transfers, manage transfer requests and view history. Globus Online also provides a command line interface:

ssh <your_globus_online_account>@cli.globusonline.org

The data transfer happens between two predefined Globus Online endpoints. The user will need to authenticate to both endpoints to pick data source and destination. The authentication generate tokens (grid proxies) with limited lifetime. They are stored at Globus Online for that user as substitutes of passwords, for both endpoints. When completed, a report will be sent to the user via e-mail.

If the data transfer is stopped because a user proxy has expired, one just needs to re-authenticate to renew the proxy.

One of the endpoints (but not both) can be a GlobusConnect running on user's destop/laptop. GlobusConnect is available for free download after login to GLobus Online.

Globus Online endpoint at SLAC/LCLS

SLAC has several Globus Oline endpoints. One of them is for LCLS (slac#lcls). To be able to access Globus Online endpoint defined for LCLS, please send an email to pcds-help@slac.stanford.edu. Once a user is enabled to use GLobus Online with LCLS, the user can authenticate with endpoint slac#lcls using SLAC unix username/passowrd. The step of manually enabling users won't be necessary once the testing phase is completed.

Support

For more information about Globus Online, including documentation, support, troubleshooting, please login to Globus Online and check out the "Resource" section at the bottom. If you suspect that a problem is SLAC/LCLS specific, please contact unix-admin@slac.stanford.edu.
