Introduction:

Two test beam periods are scheduled in 2009 at CERN: May and October. These tests are crucial in view of validating the sensor for the IBL, but also for the SLHC tracker upgrade.

ATLAS TestBeam periods in 2009

  • 10-17 Oct. in H6 with the EUDET telescope
  • 24-04 Nov. in H8 (depending on if we can switch with ALFA) with the BAT and Morpurgo magnet
  • 20-25 Nov. in H6 with the BAT (preliminary)

The test beam setup is based on two main components:
    - Silicon telescope (so called "Bonn" telescope or BAT) with is its own DAQ and monitoring. Have integrated the TurboDAQ system.
    - 3D assemblies read out by TurboDAQ (1 TurboDAQ per tested board). We shall have at least 3 TurboDAQ available, plus one in the lab (building 161).

Several important preparation activities have to be performed soon, both hardware and software:

  1. setup mailing lists.
  2. general test beam plan: what type of measurement do we want to do.
  3. test and debug of the Bonn telescope, in the lab. Bonn telescope availability needs to be confirmed.
  4. understand the synchronization problem between TurboDAQ and the the telescope DAQ.
  5. the devices will be beam tested in a 2T magnet. The setup has to be modified to be able to run, safely, in this environment.
  6. modify the setup to be able to read out several (3 or 4) 3D boards.
  7. some of the tested assemblies will be irradiated prior to the test beam. These devices will be kept cold and will have to be beam tested cold. A cold box has to be designed (and has to able to operate in the 2T magnetic field).

It will be very important to have a fast online feedback, in particular on several key measurements for which the analysis software should be available to run online. General data analysis will have to be performed as soon as data are taken. In order to achieve high data analysis efficiency during the test beam periods, several actions are planned:

  1. restart the software working group
  2. share the code among all analysts
  3. resume asap the weekly analysis meetings
  4. train data analysis on 2008 test beam data
  5. setup an electronic logbook.
  6. resume simulation studies.
  7. understand where to store the data.

With less priority, two points were also discussed:

 - use of the EuDet telescope, which offers much better space resolution. The EuDet telescope has smaller aperture compared to the Bonn telescope so a fast online alignment would be more critical. DAQ compatibility and synchronization would require work. Contact with EuDet people has been made.

 - development of an improved testbeam DAQ system.
