Present: Amber Boehnlein (phone), Rob Cameron, Arno Candel, Ashley Deacon, Richard Dubois, Thomas Eriksson

Seminars

  • Arno has assembled a working group to identify talks and speakers. The group will meeting physically for the first time on 3/7 at 15:30.
  • target is the last week of April for the first seminar (to coincide with Amber's arrival) and will be monthly
  • they will sort through several interesting suggestions already proferred
Scientific Computing mailing list
  • the request was made again for someone to take responsibility for populating such a list. The idea was to silently seed with with know scientific computing aficionados and then open it up when we announce the seminars etc etc.
  • have not closed the loop on the "volunteer" yet
SuperComputing 2011 prep
  • to be held in Seattle in November
  • need to assemble this years' organising committee.
    • Question about how much effort it is worth.
    • About 1 FTE went into last year's from July to November.
    • can we reuse some of last year's successful booth
    • get help from CD admins
    • we also need to find out if Ops will pay most of the shot again this year
Scientific Computing Jamboree dates
  • PPA has an Advisory Committee review scheduled for 6/1-2. Richard at least would like some breathing room afterwards. Amber is not available the week of 6/16-17, so we're looking at 6/23-24. And it gives Amber more time to settle in and contribute.
Advertising SCSC
  • Richard will give an intro at the ALD staff meeting on 3/7
  • we talked about postponing the visits to the Directorates until Amber is here, to present the full picture - and maybe know more about the budget.
From Imre on Forum readiness and an LTDA LDRD

Following up on my action items since I was not able to attend the meeting.

#1: Status of the forum tool installation:

  • Unix servers are being installed now, we are targeting an end of March go-live, maybe sooner.
  • It would be important to form a small group to discuss the different governance issues of running an enterprise level forum solution. Following is the process, I would like to propose:

a) Establish a group (please let me know if you can participate). It will include members of the SCSC, one or two stakeholders from Ops. (new communication manager, Gale Fong...). Participation from the IT sub-council would be important as well.

b) The group comes up with a proposal that should reviewed by approved by the SCSC, IT Sub-Council, the communication manager and the CIO.

I think we can do this in 2 60min meetings. Please let me know if you can participate, I will try to set up the first meeting for next week. Please come to the meeting with ideas and recommendations.

#2: LDRD for the Long Term Data Access system (LTDA)
Operations would be happy to partner with any of the science directorates to put forward an LDRD proposal. Designing systems to be in place unchanged for 10+years is a very interesting and challenging problem and results of such research may be useful across the science labs.
