May 17th 2006
Present: Ian MacGregor, Venkata Samineni, Karen, Tony, Igor, Dan, Warren, Tom, Steve.
Topics covered
- Performance Monitoring
- Ian demoed Web based DB admin (running on glast-oracle01:5500)
- Oracle enterprise manager (runs on server)
- Requires to log in to server (not necessarily as system, but currently only set up to allow admin access)
- Looks like many useful features
- (Action Item) Ian will look at setting up an account with read only access.
- Discussion as to whether we can look at specific applications in some way (as opposed to the whole database).
-
- GridControl – coming soon, can be run centrally and connect to multiple databases. Its up in test mode right now.
- Application Express
- George was not able to make the meeting to demo HTMLDB. We will try to schedule another meeting when George returns
- Locks
- Oracle uses automatic row level locking by default. Has automatic deadlock detection.
- Oracle Accounts
- A unix command (res list user) exists that can show who requested a particular oracle account.
- At the database level it is possible to create accounts with read only access.
- We can choose to allow only a few people to request accounts.
- (Action Item) Karen will develop policy for greating glast schemas and setting up a default account with read-only acccess
- Using glast-oracle02 as a DEV database
- glast-oracle02 is (will be) set up as a logical standby.
- In principle this could be a hot failover. This is still under development in conjunction with a consultant.
- This may also be a solution for the question of backup database on campus.
- We can set up a dev database on glast-oracle02.
- (Action Item) Karen will contact Ian about setting up a dev database on glast-oracle02
