Deployed chillers

In the detector group, we use two types of chillers (both from the same manufacturer):

  1.  Thermotek T257P - 210W
  2.  Thermotek RC22A750-50R0-FSC - 700W.  3U rack mounted.  The "50R0-FSC" refers to option 2 (gear pump) of their pumping system, which allows up to 43.5psi of pressure.  E.g. https://www.thermotekusa.com/product.php?pid=107

The specs allow for distilled water or glycol.  However, we've had trouble getting glycol to work with these chillers, so we use distilled water.

The controls for both chillers are (almost) identical.  The same IOC can be used for both.  The only difference I've seen is that the flow rate does not show up on the front panel of the smaller chiller.

Priming

In order to prime the chiller for use, use a short 3/8" tubing to connect the supply and return of the chiller and:

  • run at 100% pump drive for 5 mins
  • run at 60% pump drive for 5 mins
  • run at 15% pump drive for 5 mins

Once primed, we typically run the chiller at 15% pump drive, although if the flow is low (<1.1 LPM), one can bump it up.  Lower pump drive settings tend to extend the chiller life.

Connectors, tubing

The connection of the tubing on the detector-side can be either 1/4"  or 3/8" self-sealing quick connects.  On the pump-side, they can be 1/4" (chiller-side is 3/8", output is 1/4") or 3/8" push-to-connect fittings:

1/4" quick connects:  SS-QC4-B-400 and SS-QC4-D-400 from Swagelok

3/8" quick connects:  SS-QC6-B-600 and SS-QC6-D-600 from Swagelok

1/4" push-to-connect:  PLCD29004 from Bay Advanced Technologies

3/8" push-to-connect:  PLCD29006 from Bay Advanced Technologies
