Abstract

It is important to monitor the environmental data from the CU to get early wind of something going wrong with it.  For this reason, bringing up the Environmental Monitor should be one of the earliest activies that is done after applying power to the VME crate and turning on the 28 V to the CU (described elsewhere).

Housekeeping Server

Generally, the monitor will already be up on one of the desktops on LAT-BTserver.  When it isn't, double click on the HskGui icon on the desktop.  This will bring up a console window that will rarely contain any information.  When it does contain information, it is a problem that should be noted in the e-log and reported to the Online group (e.g. through JIRA).  Since it is so rare, you can minimize (hide) the window.  There is no need to periodically monitor it.  Look at it only when things don't appear to be working right.

Housekeeping GUIs

Next, double click on the HskGui icon that is on the desktop.  This will also bring up a console window that can be minimized.  The alarm logger and two strip chart GUIs will eventually pop up as well.  The strip charts show various voltages and temperatures of the CU.  The alarm logger shows status and alarms, and is responsible for popping up alarm windows that must be acknowledged.

Alarms

During certain conditions, some alarms are expected and normal and will need to be acknowledged.  If an alarm persistently pops up, it is cause for concern and should be investigated.  This can happen when the chiller has tripped or was not turned on, for example.  You'll also see the temperatures rising in the strip charts.  Remember to note persistent alarms in the ELogbook.
