SC15 Brainstorm Meeting — 5/26/2015

SC15 theme “HPC Transforms”

Location: Exhibit Hall 2; #2009

Keep It Simple.

Avoid a five day setup for a 3 day display.

SU/SLAC Staff needed to help setup and takedown.

  • need to find out who’s going from SLAC and what our travel budget is.

Network setup would occupy a corner of the booth.

Displays for research/science etc. could be arranged in various configurations.

  • Explore option of having vendor that produced the SU ceiling sign also design, build and deploy our booth.
  • Pursue themes in transforming science and education

STEM involvement.

  • Contact Persis Drell for faculty involvement?

SCIENCE/RESEARCH to CONSIDER for DISPLAY

  • Genomics
  • Free Electron Laser
  • SIMES
  • SUNCAT

    • Stuart Marshall Viz Lab; anything usable yet?
  • SRCF Sherlock cluster
    • Show the science that is coming out of it.
    • Already have some posters/demos?

  • Show how CS faculty use cloud technology for online classes and collaboration.
  • IOT ideas
    • Does Mayank have some IOT/Science demos that could be useful for SC15?

May be difficult to get SMEs to talk about their science to SC15 audience.

  • Record presentations to run with the displays and list "showtimes".

Setup SC15 Confluence site? Setup at SLAC.

Giveaway ideas:

  • SU nerd glasses w/chip for tracking locations within conference for fun; wireless.
  • Maybe disguise the chip to look like a Band Aid to complete the Nerd look? :)

Current inventory of items for use:

  • two 50” monitors
  • tables and chairs
  • Phil has list of items.

Freeman provided carpet/pad at the conference venue. Should we look into purchasing carpet/carpet tiles?

Budget:

  • SLAC will have to come up with budget for travel or participants.
  • Don’t worry about the budget for the rest; need design first and will work on getting funds from participating departments etc. and other generous donors.

 

ACTION Items:

  • Ruth will look at calendar to setup meetings for every two weeks.
  • Phil will make initial contact with SU sign vendor to discuss cost of doing the conference booth design.
  • Neal will work with Phil on Confluence site.
  • Yemi will talk to Stuart and another research opportunity TBD.
