MEC-U Safety Systems: Strawman Model by Eric Cunningham

Suggestion - ask ES&H folks to hold on questions until the end of presentation.  KL suggested offering a form where attendees can take notes during the discussion.

Anticipated Hazards: FEL-based X-rays, Laser-based Hard Radiation, Laser Radiation, Electrical Discharge/Stored Power, Laser Self-Destruction (~OPS)

Operating Modes: X-Rays, Lasers (LSS Operation Modes)

Slide Notes for modification prior to Town Hall:

  • Change wording of 'Controlled access' as this has a specific meaning for Accelerator Operations.  Ian suggests 'Access Permissions'.
  • Ian suggests slide order should be each hazard>mitigation/hazard>mitigation (vs. all hazards first and all mitigations second).
  • Point out that people need to be in the Laser Rooms while lasers are operating.  RRL - LLNL requires touch safe.  For HE-LP, no one is allowed to be in immediate vicinity while flash lamps are firing.
  • Keep MPS slide, but need to put together plan on identifying/listing all hazards and mitigations.

Steven Yang suggests introductions.

2 talks:  30 minute talk on 'What is MEC-U'?  + System (RP: Sayed Rokni, LSS: Mike Woods, Electrical Safety: Doug Stickney).  Ginger will send out logistical planning e-mail.
