3D monitor specs and product research

Input data:
- image streams for left and right eyes are given as separate jpeg or png files |
Workflow at SC10:
- merged left and right images into double-wide images
- used tool to convert double-wide images to quicktime movie
- used open source tool mplayer to replay resulting movie
- hardware setup:
       - workstation with Nvidia quadro graphics card
       - 2 DLP HD Projectors with pol. filters
       - Large projection screen
Quite expensive hardware, and transport and setup of screen, projectors and workstation was a cumbersome procedure.
Decided to investigate if 3D-TV and 3D blu-ray player could work for our needs.
Used 30-day free trial version of commercial software (Sony Vegas Pro) to convert input images to 3D blu-ray compatible format.
Successfully tested resulting blu-ray disc at Sony store with external 3D blu-ray player and 60" 3D TV.
After comparing several 3D TV sets decided that Panasonic VIERA TC P65GT30 (65" plasma) had best image quality to price ratio.
Tofigh is working with Teri to order this one.
Next steps:
- order compatible glasses (about 10 pairs)
- order Sony 3D blu-ray player and cabling
- buy license of Sony Vegas Pro (~$600)
- get box for transportation of TV to SC11
- 3D movie content ....

Follow up with the LSST telescope hologram

Message from KT:
The person who controls the hologram, Suzanne Jacoby, has agreed
to make it available to us in mid-October.  It apparently ships nicely
in a compact package.  The light comes with its own stand, so I don't
think a table is necessary.

In addition, they're working on a second hologram with a cutaway
of the telescope and support building.  We may be able to choose which
one we want to use at the end of August.
