Components that will be installed in the FACET-II IP vacuum must:

  1. Be chemical cleaned by the SLAC plating shop or ultra sonic cleaned with acetone and alcohol (see below for procedure).
  2. Not be painted or anodized.
  3. Be vacuum grease free (unless absolutely needed and approved by Christine Clarke.)
  4. Be zinc free and preferably made of stainless steel or aluminum.
  5. Have vent holes where needed to prevent trapped volumes that can cause a virtual leak.

Ultrasonic cleaning procedure

  1. Wipe off excess machining fluids, oils, debris etc.
  2. Put components in vessel and completely submerge in acetone.
  3. Place vessel in ultrasonic bath for 15-20 minutes.
  4. If acetone is clear, dispose of acetone in an approved solvent waste container and move on to step 5. If acetone is soiled, dispose of acetone in approved solvent container and repeat steps 2 and 3 until acetone is clear.
  5. Place components in vessel and completely submerge in isopropyl alcohol.
  6. Place vessel in ultrasonic bath for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Dispose isopropyl alcohol in approved solvent waste container.
