This page is for capturing information specific to the GBCR SEU tests at CERN IRRAD Sep/2005, for the convenience of operations with all pointers collected in one place.

General Information

SEU Test Facility and Hardware Setup

CERN PS-IRRAD Proton Facility:   [training requirements for access], [computer connections]

IRRAD Beam Monitoring

Oct/1-13/2025 session configuration and schedule

Station allocation: IRRAD Zone 1  (one of the 3 stations)

Zone-1 mapZone-1 Patch Panels

Zone 1 area of IRRAD zone map. Red X in beamline are remote controllable DUT stations which can move transverse to beam or vertically. Blue dot is "Bunker" area at 1.5m straight distance to DUT stations, where most of our readout electronics will reside. The 16m red hashed path is the facility cables with Patch Panel at each end which users can adapt.

Similar patch panels at Bunker and control room end. Power outlets are remote controllable.

Schedule:

DateActivities
Oct/1 (Wednesday)Initial installation of equipment in Zone 1 bunker area and DUT station
Oct/1-6 (Wed-Mon)Operations of first beam session (no provision for intervention access)
Oct/7 (Tuesday)Possible short access and low intensity runs
Oct/8 (Wednesday)

Access for setup changes, changing DUT chips etc.

Oct/8-13 (Wed-Mon)

Operations of 2nd beam session (no provision for intervention access)

Oct/15 (Wednesday)

Access for equipment removal.

Setup preparation:

Equipment list shipped from SLAC to CERN

Carrier card mounting on DUT table:   [conceptual scheme], [Todd's mounting frame drawing: pdfSTL], [Mounting plate

Additional setup adapting components:

  • A/C plug adaptors to turn Swiss outlets to US 2-prong to host the AC→DC converters for KC705,miniPC,8-port switch power. Also need some 2-3m extension cords to reach the readout ares from Patch Panel (PP).
  • GBCR LV TWP banana plugs adaption to PP BNC got some adaptor/cable from Federico to allow GBCR LV to jumps on the 16m BNC facility line between PP to use the IRRAD Facility LV supplies at control room ?
  • SLAC sent ethernet cables are very short  (1-2ft) for local cross connections only among our readout comments in bunker area. Need two slightly longer ethernet cables (2-3m) to connect the miniPCs to PP.
  • Adaption of IRRAD beam on/off signal to KC705 readout: Looking for BNC-SMA adaptor cables to connect KC705 J11/J12 (or J13/J14) SMA ports to Facility PP crunch BNC lines to allow beam on/off signals to be sent to KC705 to record beam status with our data logging.  The beam status signals are standard util;ities at control room PP with raw signal being 5V TTL pulse of 1us, but can be converted to other signal protocols e.g. NIM in the control room before feeding it to bunker readout electronics.

Software/Firmware

Many new featured were introduced by Liangyu to improve the debug/summary functionalities since the previous GBCR3 register overhaul. Control handles for retime mode operations are added  together with new infrastructure to support further development of EQ parameter scans and retime bathtub scans as part of the eventual standard QC process. This development branch to be used for the SEU sessions are hosted at the existing CERN Gitlab RCE project area: https://gitlab.cern.ch/rce/gbcr_qc  with associated documentation area: https://gbcr-qc.docs.cern.ch that includes a Testing Manual covering various aspects of the QC/testing, from hardware to firmware/software.
