Background

NMWG has been working on a XML representation of network performance data (characteristics). Due to the recent work of GEANT GN2 and the PerfSONAR collaboration, a recent surge of interest and activity has began to make network monitoring more generic and accessible.

This work will form a fundamental part of the numerous services and clients that will consume perfsonar data. the need is two fold:

  1. NMWG is a consistent XML framework from which different types of network characteristics can be reprsented. With this consistency lies the need for code reuse.
  2. There is a need to define a flexible API from which NMWG data can be both consumed and exposed.

The success of this work will depend upon the flexibility and efficiency by which the Perl-NMWG interaction can take place. Perl has been chosen due to the ability to quickly prototype and build functional proof of concept programs from which one can experiment with ideas and solutions.

Work Products

  1. Thourough understanding of the NMWG specifications
  2. In depth knowledge of XML and related technologies (XPath, XQuery, XSLT etc)
  3. In depth Knowledge of Perl
  4. An understand of the use cases for typical services and clients.
