Send an email and let the beam line scientists know what your plan is. This is a really good way to start out any beam time, but especially if your experiments require special set-ups.

Reach out to the beam line scientists with some info:

  1. What elements you will want to measure.
  2. Do you think you will need a monochromator crystal change? (Not sure? Check here: SSRL Crystal Glitch Database)
  3. What conditions do you need to measure in?
    • Room temp?
    • Cryo?
    • Protected atmosphere?
    • Special set-up you'll bring with you?
  4. Will you be measuring transmission or fluorescence spectra?

If you haven't run experiments at this beam line before, this is also a good opportunity to ask the beam line scientists about the specifics of the beam line you'll be working at.

Beam line scientists are on-site at SSRL during weekdays only. Each beam line scientist is around for slightly different hours, but in general there will not be someone on site to change mono crystal sets or make changes at the beam line after 7pm. It's important that you plan any aspects of your run which require a beamline scientist for weekdays, and early enough in the day that this can be done before they go home.
