I. Position Summary:

A. What do SEA's do?

The nature of the S&EA role can vary widely from day to day and also between associates based on where your assigned area is within LCLS. Areas are divided into LCLS Instruments (Outdated Revisions: AMO is now TMO, SXR is now TXI - under install, and a new hutch exists on the upper level RIX - under install). Typically, an SEA is assigned two areas to support.

At the time of the writing, there are two general modes of support you may be providing under the Operations or Installation support roles. In either case, you may be responsible for the following examples below. As an S&EA, you will be both leading a team (~2-5 individuals) in these tasks or accomplishing them yourself (no worries if you have never done any/none of these tasks, there will always be someone there to teach!):

  • Mechanical installations
    • assembly of 8020 component frames
    • mounting/grouting granite stands
    • mounting/cutting/fabrication various panels/stands/covers/etc.
  • Vacuum installations
    • RGA carts
    • Leak checking
    • bellow connections to beam line
    • assembling end stations/instruments
  • Controls installations
    • cable pulling
    • cable terminations
    • panel mounting
    • DC power checkouts

B. Typical Hours

Working hours are dependent on the job tasks you have at hand. We are a 24/7 facility that also appreciates a work/life balance. At 7a every weekday morning we have an LCLS wide tailgate that attendance is required for onsite work for a given day. Currently, it is a zoom meeting with the main goal to ensure that work meets the require COVID safe (& general safety) conditions and space conflicts are avoided. For work that is dependent on Technician Support, work hours are adjusted to match their schedule (7a-3:30p). For work that is dependent on yourself/other departments (Scientists, ECS - aka Controls, Experiment schedules, etc.) your hours should be shifted accordingly to ensure your work is being delivered at your corresponding agreed upon completion dates. This varies from SEA to SEA (i.e. some SEAs work 7a-3:30p, others 9a-6p).

C. Time sheets (Vacation, PTO, sick days, etc.)

Time sheets are submitted through here and also where you will be requesting vacation/PTO & recording your sick days. Your work hours are measured through percentage of effort rather than hours (i.e. did you give 100% of work effort?). Details on vacation, sick time, PTO, holidays, etc. can be found here. Time sheets can be complicated as every area you work in can has multiple PA codes (pay codes- attached is a PA matrix for your records) that you charge your percentage of work to.
