Abstract: Topological data analysis (TDA) seeks to understand and utilize the shape of data. An important task in TDA is the design and computation of topological invariants of sampled data, which can be transformed into features for machine learning, or used to inform an exploratory modeling process. This talk will begin with an introduction to the core methods of TDA and some scientific applications. We will then present our recent work on the use of hierarchical models to investigate larger and more complex data sets.
