Igor Gaponenko joined SLAC as a research software developer in January 2009. His primary project is the data management and data analysis system for LCLS experiments. He also provides an on-going support for BABAR databases, and he’s also participating in the BABAR LTDA project.

Before moving to SLAC Igor had spent 10 years at LBL, working on BABAR databases and various software projects for the BABAR experiment. During this period Igor developed and supported CDB (the distributed Conditions Database for the BABAR experiment).

Igor got his Masters degree in Physics from Novosibirsk State University (Russia) in 1989. In addition to Physics Igor took a standard set of courses in Computer Science. His specialization was ‘Physics Informatics’. His early career began in BINP (Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics) of the Russian Academy of Science, where he was in charge of the DAQ system software for experiments with SND (Spherical Neutral Detector) at the VEPP-2M collider. Igor had been working in BINP through the end of 1998 before moving to the United States.

In the years 1993 through 1995 Igor was a member of the RD-13 Collaboration at CERN, the R&D project to study “The Scalable Data Acquisition and Trigger System for LHC Experiment”. Igor’s research topic was to investigate data flows in a complex DAQ system composed of thousands of computers, a few layers of network switches. The primary technique was Discrete Event Modeling using the MODSIM-II object-oriented language.

Igor is passionate about JavaScript & PHP programming. His motto is: “The web browser is THE operating system of nowadays! So, it deserves to be treated and programmed like that”. His other area of professional interests includes parallel programming and GPGPU programming with a specific focus on OpenCL.

In his private life Igor is the father of three children. And he’s proud that his oldest son has chosen a career in Physics. Igor’s hobby includes photography and cycling.
