Purpose

...

The purpose of this document is to provide a procedure for the cleaning of Aluminum parts in the ultra-sonic bath (located in B950_208), using a solution of Ridoline Alkaline Cleaner.

PPE

...

Nitrile gloves and safety glasses will be needed while handling the Ridoline powder as well as the solution.

Waste Stream

...

Distilled water should be used in the ultra-sonic bath as well as in the baskets containing the parts to be cleaned. Ridoline will be used in one of the baskets. The other 2 baskets will be used to rinse. All fluids should be disposed of in an established hazardous waste container. Prior to starting, ensure that you have enough room in the container to hold at least 8 gallons of liquid waste.

After the use of the ultra-sonic bath, the parts will be wiped down with lint-free wipes and alcohol (IPA or ethanol). Ensure you have a way of properly disposing of solvent soaked rags.

Procedure

...

  1. Starting with ultrasonic bath empty is preferred. If necessary, drain any fluid from the bath using the drain valve and hose on the side of the bath.
  2. Place all three of the solid (not mesh) baskets in the bath. The basket on the right will be the ridoline solution. The middle basket will be the first rinse. The left basket will be the final rinse.
  3. Fill all three baskets with distilled water. Water level should be to approximately 1 inch from the top.
  4. Fill the ultrasonic bath with water (can be tap water).
  5. In the right basket (labeled “Ridoline”), add approx. 200 ml of Ridoline powder.
  6. On the control box to the left of the bath, turn on the heater.
  7. On the bath, set the heater temp dial to 140-150 F. Red indicator light next to the dial should turn indicating that the heater is on. (Once at temperature, the light will turn on and off as the heater cycles.)
  8. Allow the bath to heat up. This should take ~ 1-2 hours.
  9. Turn on the ultrasonic bath.
  10. Place items to be cleaned into the first (Ridoline) basket. Make sure you will be able to remove the items. A piece of steel wire or stainless steel tubing through a machined hole works for removing parts that are too far below the solution’s surface to remove by hand.
  11. Leave parts in Ridoline solution for 3-15 minutes.
  12. Remove the parts from the first basket and place them into the second basket (DI water).
  13. Leave the parts in the second basket to be cleaned for up to 30 minutes.
  14. Remove the parts from the second basket and place them into the third basket (DI water).
  15. Leave parts in third basket to be cleaned for up to 30 minutes.
  16. NOTE: The parts are now cleaned and should only be handled with clean gloves.
  17. Remove the parts from the basket and place on sheet of aluminum foil to prevent contact with dirty surfaces.
  18. Use Isopropyl Alcohol and lint free wipes to wipe down the parts. Take care to get into the smaller crevices and machined holes.
  19. Use a clean dry lint free wipe to dry the parts.
  20. Wrap the parts in aluminum foil or bag them to keep them clean.
