PerfSONAR defines a middleware application layer whereby network metrics and be discovered, consumed, published and stored. The importance of defining standard mechanisms to gather data from various disparate networks is paramount in being able to automatically determine problems on networks (alerts) and to automatically diagnose and pin-point network issues.

The wiki contains much valuable information on the configuration, installation, running and development of PerfSONAR.
